From Cyprus to Bribie with Love
On the 2nd of May 2011, the Cypriot Community Association of Queensland graciously donated an Icon of St Andrew brought from Cyprus to the Panayia Theotokos Chapel on Bribie Island, Queensland.
A liturgy was conducted by Fr Nicholas Brown and was followed by a lunch on the grounds of Tom Lemnos Youth Centre. Around 200 members and friends attended the function and had a very enjoyable day.
Take a look at the Photo Gallery for photos of the day.
“Kastellorizo House” opens at the Tom Lemnos Youth Centre
The Tom Lemnos Youth Centre at Woorim on Bribie Island took a great leap forward recently, with the blessing and opening of its first accommodation cabin. The new cabin provides hot showers for campers as well as a home for the new on-site manager, Alex. It represents the first step in a long journey, with the long term goal of 20 cabins on site for up to 120 people, to accommodate school groups, seniors groups or families. Read more
"Kastellorizo House" was jointly opened on Sunday 24 October 2010 by Father Dimitri Tsakas who performed a liturgy at the adjoining Panayia Theotokos chapel, Nick Politis, President of the Kastellorizian Association of Queensland and John Panaretos, Chair of the Tom Lemnos Youth Centre Committee. The cabin is named to honour the Kastellorizian Community of Queensland who made a $52,000 donation toward its construction.
The Bribie Committee must also be congratulated on its tireless fundraising efforts, including the annual Bribie Paniyiri and the major Art Union which was drawn on the day.
The lucky first prize winner won a trip for two to Athens donated by GYC accountants and Harvey World Travel. Other prizewinners took home a huge plasma flat screen TV donated by Wow Sight & Sound, a kontosouvli donated by PanTechnic Engineering and a trip for two to New Zealand care of Zorba Hair Fashion and Pricecutters.
The monies raised by the committee are directed exclusively to the construction of the youth centre on the Bribie Island site for future generations of the Greek community. The cabins are flexibly designed to be suitable for families and seniors accommodation as well.
The site is immediately open to bookings by campers and offers hot showers, toilets and an unparalleled natural setting. We expect big demand over the holidays since it is only a short walk to rolling ocean beaches, pristine national park and beach 4-wheel driving.
